Skepticism is a movement that promotes critical thinking, awareness, scientific truth, and common sense. Skepticism allows for Darwin's discoveries about evolution and speaks up against religion's oppression of science, skepticism promotes equal rights for men and women, and equal civil rights for homosexual people. I am a paranormal claimant, but I go about investigating my "paranormal" experiences in the skeptical method.
You might like to browse at whatstheharm.net to see some of the reasons why skepticism is so important.
Jim Carr is no Robert Lancaster, and I ain't no Sylvia Browne!
There is a man who works from home with website design and marketing in Phoenix, Arizona, named Jim Carr. He posts on the internet under the name UncaYimmy. When I started my paranormal investigation three years ago in the summer of 2007 I joined a skeptical forum to discuss my claims and get help with test design. Jim Carr was at first one of the most helpful of the internet-skeptics but later convinced himself that I was dangerous and that I need to be stopped.
I have not found one other case where someone who experiences that which falls under the category of "paranormal" (not implying that this be verified true paranormal events) who rather than assume that those be true or start to practice them or exploit people chooses to investigate those claims as a skeptic and with the skeptical method. Am I the only skeptical woo?
Sylvia Browne is one of the most notorious and publicized of practicing psychics. Robert Lancaster is a skeptic who made a website about Sylvia's many errors and the dangers of her predictions. Robert presents the facts in an objective, and above all impersonal manner. See his website at http://stopsylvia.com/.
Jim Carr attempted to make a similar website about me, similarly called http://www.stopvisionfromfeeling.com/. The only problem is, I am not practicing psychic readings. I only do readings on participating skeptics and only in order to evaluate and study my claim in the skeptical method to learn more about it! I make no money with my claims, unlike Sylvia. I have by now spent at least $2,500 of my own money, choosing to sacrifice having a car and a great deal of shopping in the process so that I can maintain this rather expensive hobby. I do not call myself a psychic, I call myself a paranormal claimant and skeptic. Jim Carr's website does not present facts, it presents his twists on things to make me look in a certain light to promote his ideas that I be the next Sylvia Brown, and that I'd need to be stopped. I frequently tell Jim Carr that he would make a great lawyer, politician or a businessman... he can advocate a lie, defend a one-sided corrupt political agenda as if his life depended on it, or sell any kind of crap and make people buy it. He takes my career advice as an insult. Go figure.
